Police have arrested a Bronx man and charged him with the attempted rape of a woman jogging in the northeastern corner of Central Park on Friday night.
Investigators said the woman was jogging near Lasker Pool at 106th street and East Drive when Saul Alvaraz allegedly grabbed her from behind.
They said she began screaming and a passerby called 911.
Alvaraz fled but police said the woman was able to give a detailed description, and he was eventually picked up.
Park-goers said they were disturbed by the incident.
"That's terrible because I run here at least three times a week, maybe two to three times a week and I'm always with someone. But there are times that I run by myself and now I'm terrified," a New Yorker said.
"I don't think it's that safe honestly once it gets dark," a bike rider said. "I heard like a lot of nasty things go on here at night and I think they should have more patrols around."
By Sunday evening, Alvaraz remained in police custody.
