From a "meatopia" to a twist on pork chops and applesauce, this year's New York City Wine and Food Festival is expected to have something for everyone. Zagat editor Kelly Dobkin filed the following report for NY1.
At this year’s New York City Wine and Food Festival, the ten-year old Meatopia fest, founded by food writer Josh Ozersky, is joining the roster on Sunday, October 19, featuring a whole animal court that includes whole hogs, lambs and a 1000-pound steer from butcher Pat LaFrieda.
"There’s the thing with Meatopia. When you buy the Meatopia ticket, you never take your wallet out again. You go in and you eat anything you want, as much as you want. This is probably my single greatest roster. All of the great meat minds will have gathered together. It will be like a congress of carnal knowledge," says Meatopia Founder Josh Ozersky.
You can also expect dishes from world class chefs like Paul Qui, Bryan Voltaggio and NY’s own Hugh Mangum of Mighty Quinn’s BBQ.
"We do pork cheeks at the restaurant as a special. They’re Cheshire pork, so it’s a heritage breed—smoke them for about eight hours. We’re going to do a play on that for Meatopia. What we’re going to do is an apple achaar, which is an apple pickle and serve that with a coriander-mint chutney. It’s like pork chops and applesauce," says Mangum.
On Saturday, October 18, chef Mario Batali returns to host Jets and Chefs—the ultimate tailgate along with Super Bowl Champion Joe Namath. At this tasting event, you’ll find a variety of local restaurants serving up their version of tailgate fare including the Jamaican-inspired Miss Lily’s.
"It’s a mashup of a Chinese-style dim sum dish with Jamaican flavors. We start with pork belly that’s brined and marinated and roasted really slow, and it’s sliced and put on a steamed bun with spicy cucumbers, mango chutney and jerk mayonnaise," says Miss Lily's Executive Chef Adam Schop.
