1848...The New York Herald reports the discovery of gold in California, sparking the "Gold Rush."

1957...First the Dodgers, now the baseball Giants say they're skipping out for San Francisco, leaving the Yankees as the only hometown team until the Mets arrive in 1962.

1991...Seven-year-old Gavin Cato is struck and killed by a car that went out of control on a street in Crown Heights. The car belonged to a motorcade for the Lubavitcher Grande Rebbe. Hours later, an Hasidic man, Yankel Rosenbaum, is stabbed to death by young men shouting "kill the Jews." Over the next four days, rioting crowds attack police, damage property and terrify residents.
