1855..."The Jews' Hospital" – now known as Mount Sinai Medical Center – opens on West 28th Street.
1968...New York Senator Robert Kennedy is gunned down at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after celebrating his victory in the California Democratic primary for president. He dies the next day. Kennedy had served as U.S. Senator from New York since 1964.
1993...Julie Krone, riding Colonial Affair, wins the Belmont Stakes and becomes the first woman to win a Triple Crown horse race.
1995...A "J" train smashes into the rear of a stopped "M" train on the Williamsburgh Bridge, killing "J" train motorman Layton Gibson and injuring 54 others. A report rules out mechanical failure and indicates that Layton failed to see the train in front of him.
