1951...After going 0-12 in his first dozen appearances at the plate, New York Giants rookie Willie Mays gets his first major league hit. The "Say Hey Kid" slugs a home run off Warren Spahn – but it's the only run for New York as the Giants lose to the Boston Braves 4-1.

1957...It's a black day for New York City baseball fans as the National League approves the move of the both the Giants and the Dodgers to California. The moves leave the Yankees as the city's only major league team until the arrival of the New York Mets in 1962.

Today's New Yorker birthdays include former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, born in Brooklyn in 1944.
