NY1 VIDEO: As part of its 9/11 tenth anniversary coverage, NY1 takes a look back at reporter Gigi Stone's September 16, 2001 story on how the fire department held a promotion ceremony just days after the attack to replenish its ranks and to honor those who died.
NY1 FOLLOW-UP: One of the men promoted in the above story is Salvatore Cassano, who has continued to rise through the ranks. In December, he was tapped by Mayor Bloomberg to serve as Fire Commissioner. The 40-year veteran has held every rank in the fire department.
