The first part of Brooklyn Bridge Park opened this past spring, the second in June. And while the two areas don't yet connect, they will in a matter of weeks. NY1's Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report. The new Brooklyn Bridge Park has fared well this hot summer season. Only Piers 1 and 6 have opened to the public so far but they're enough to draw the crowds.
"We've had a great amount of attendance. Almost 10,000 people each day coming here on the weekends to visit Pier 1 and 6. And during the week we have 5,000 people a day," said Brooklyn Bridge Park President Regina Meyer.
The steel domes at the children's playground on Pier 1 have been replaced by play houses because they got too hot for kids to play on. And the entranceway at the foot of old Fulton has been completed to connect with the Fulton Ferry Landing. But the only way to travel from Piers 1 to 6 is along the street under the highway. That will soon change. Beyond a currently fenced off area, a new connection is being created that will go through the park.
"It's going to be a beautiful walk along the waterfront with fresh water gardens and our bikeway, greenway connection and then beyond that we worked really really hard with the city's department of transportation to build an interim bikeway," Meyer said.
The park offers special programming like movie nights and children's entertainment to help bring in a wide range of people. And more foot traffic means more business for local businesses.
"I'm sure it's increased the business at night. They have a movie in the park and stuff so the night business on Thursdays has been pretty packed in here," said Gina Peluso of Grimaldi's Pizza.
The opening of Pier 6 has been helpful to One Brooklyn Bridge Park which has seen an increase in sales.
The former Jehovah's Witnesses warehouse was converted into condos back in 2007. Then the recession hit and sales lagged. But now the 438-unit building is nearly 50 percent sold.
"We've seen a lot of activity. Summer is typically a slow time of year for sales for real estate in New York and we have not seen a slow down at all which we largely attribute to the park," said One Brooklyn Bridge Park Sales Director Rachel Poggi.
It's the only building in New York that sits in an 85-acre park. But the park is far from done. Next to open is Pier 5 which will feature soccer fields.
It's expected to happen in 2012.
